A program that has left audiences astounded and on their feet at the annual year-end performances for many years now, SHINE Theater is built around a three semester curriculum. The first 2 semesters consist of a variety of different workshops such as voice projection, presence, articulation, tongue-twisters, memorization, mime, improvisation, spatial mastery & body mechanics etc. Einstein said "Imagination is more important than knowledge" and with this in mind all this takes place in a playful and creative environment that opens the way for the children to explore their own creative process. The essence of theater requires that there is an observer so there is an annual Open House each December which provide a work-in-progress sneak peek for the parents. The third semester builds on the skills acquired in the first 2 semesters and involves focused work on a particular play. This method ensures that the children possess the basic skills they require to tackle such an undertaking and so minimizes the frustration or fear that might otherwise experience. Compressing the preparation for the performance into the final semester also keeps the play fresh and fun for the students. Another important aspect is that as the name suggests every student gets the opportunity to SHINE, and the materials are carefully selected or created to ensure such. This in-depth program not only teaches the fundamentals of acting and theater but also provides a basis for the development of leadership skills and self-confidence. The culmination of this training is the year-end performance with full costumes, sets, props, sound effects and musical accompaniment.
